Into the Wild
Velebit Mountain — 9 days
Essence of the trip
Amidst the foothills of the Velebit Mountain lies a hidden valley full of natural beauty, history, culture and endless adventures. This valley is home to a private and unique ranch, Croatia's premier horse and riding destination. We invite you on a carefully tailored horse-riding adventure to liven your spirits and engage your body. Come and stay in a real Sioux tipi or cosy chalet, ride in pristine nature, visit a ghost town on horseback, drink local whiskey and beer, and taste organic cuisine featuring home-made breads, wild-grown edibles and free-range meats. You will come as a city slicker and leave as a tried and true cowboy or cowgirl.
This trip will give you:
- An opportunity to see some of Europe's most iconic wildlife, including bears, wolves and Balkan chamois
- The chance to explore on horseback a region seldom visited by other travellers
- An intimate and luxurious private sanctuary nestled within the Velebit Mountain
- UNESCO-protected pristine wilderness
- Food for the mind and soul – all seasonal, organic and sustainably grown
Day 1: Following your afternoon arrival, you will be invited to relax, explore the ranch and meet the horses.
Day 2: The day is dedicated to natural horsemanship. You will begin mastering the silent language of horses, joining up with horses, and start communication, saddling and riding. The wranglers will show you the gear, explain its history and function, give you an introductory lesson, and take you on a two-hour trail ride in the afternoon.
Day 3: Following your breakfast, you will bid farewell to your tipi or chalet. You will ride up the mountain, through its valleys and canyons, retracing old trade routes used by merchants and caravan robbers alike. There is a high chance of spotting deer or wolves. In the evening, we will set up a camp for the night.
Day 4: After breakfast and packing up the camp, you will continue deeper into the mountain, crossing hidden springs and watercourses. This is an intense ride, covering some rough terrain, often going through unmarked territory. The day is a true adventure for real cowboys and cowgirls.
Day 5: The aim for the day is to reach the top of the mountain where breathtaking views of the islands will unfold before you.
Day 6: The day's ride takes you to the bear breeding grounds inside the National Park area. This is the furthest you will go into the mountain before turning around to find the way back to the ranch.
Day 7: On this day, we start a two-day trip that will take us to one of the earlier camping spots.
Day 8: The last day of full riding will bring us back to the comfort of the ranch. Following dinner, you will get to rest your head in the comfort of a chalet or tipi.
Day 9: Departure after breakfast.
